Surrounded by ancient olive trees at the foot of the rugged Alpilles, on the edge of Les Baux-de-Provence, one of France’s most beautiful villages stands this enchanting country house. The Bastide has been artfully restored and renovated by an architect and interior design team. It’s wonderfully private and quiet, with great views and access to hiking and biking tracks from the grounds.
The interiors focus on natural elements; there are oak parquet floors, natural stone basins, limestone in the shower rooms, raw linen curtains and a palette of neutral and earthy tones on the walls. The five en-suite bedrooms all have supremely comfortable king-size beds and views of the Alpilles or the majestic pines. Four are in the main house, and one is in the separate pool house. There’s a light-filled sitting room with plush sofas and the original working stone fireplace, a large modern kitchen and a separate dining room with seating for 10. The property also has its own fitness room.
Outside are two large terraces, on one of which is a shaded dining area positioned to take full advantage of the incredible views. There’s a comfortable outdoor lounge with a central brazier for when the sun goes down. The 21m infinity pool is led by two stone waterfall weirs, the sound of which provides a lulling backdrop if relaxing on the surrounding large cushioned sun beds. The pool house features a summer kitchen. Within the grounds is a petanque court. There are lots of sporting opportunities nearby, local markets, wineries and organic farms to visit and the ruined hilltop castle in the village to explore.
