Whitewashed walls flow seamlessly into sparkling azure views of the Aegean Sea. This is a classic Cycladic colour palette, harmonising gloriously with mother nature and crafted through exceptional attention to detail, with the whole home oriented towards the sea. Throughout the villa, there are the lightest touches of colour: an oak-framed mirror here a powder blue linen sofa there. Dazzling white walls imbue the interiors with a sense of stillness, and huge, airy windows everywhere let spellbinding vistas of peaceful Patmos bring each space to life.
It’s an ethereal oasis inside Villa Chara. The villa’s main house has an ensuite double bedroom and adjoining 2 twins with a shared bathroom. Each has sea views and floor-to-ceiling doors that open straight out to the gardens. The villa’s annexe, tucked privately away across a set of stone steps, has a double bedroom and a twin, both of which are ensuite and with sea views. All of the bathrooms are elegantly modern with rugged island flair—think charcoal stone basins and sleek chrome brassware. In the main house, there is a serene open-plan living and dining area with an airy kitchen, lofty ceilings, and gently bohemian furnishings in a soft and neutral palette. Folding glass doors open straight out to the terrace, bathing the space in sunshine.
Between the main house and an annexe, there is a generous helping of space. Each has its own shady terrace with an al fresco dining area that overlooks the sea. At the main house, the terrace has an additional outdoor lounge area and a coal barbecue. The 12-metre turquoise pool, set slightly below, unifies the space, surrounded by inviting loungers and with a large, shady pergola that houses a set of soft white sofas. It’s a lovely, peaceful spot for admiring the waters of the pool or sea, and all around are lush gardens with colourful flecks of flora.
Serene Villa Chara is an ode to the peaceful pace of life on Patmos. Adored for its sense of wistful mysticism and its gentle lull, this small Dodecanese island is rich with ancient history. The closest village, Kampos, is less than 1km from the villa. This is a tranquil spot with a few simple tavernas, an uncrowded beach, and the oldest church on the island. 9km from here is the island’s capital, Chora, an ancient hilltop town with the commanding 11th-century Monastery of St. John the Theoligan standing tall on the hills above it.
