Andalucia’s two coastlines offer something for every type of villa holiday. On the Atlantic-fronted Costa de la Luz, Bolonia is a long, undeveloped sweep of pale sand backed by a great dune and the Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia, while Zahara de los Atunes stretches for six wild kilometres beyond a former tuna-fishing village. Further south, Tarifa marks the meeting of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and has become Europe’s windsurfing and kitesurfing capital. On the Mediterranean Costa del Sol, Cabopino combines a low dune system with pine-shaded sand just east of Marbella; the Golden Mile between Marbella and Puerto Banús offers the easy glamour for which the coast is known; and the small coves and chiringuitos of Nerja, beneath the cliffs of the Axarquía, are some of the loveliest swimming spots east of Málaga.
Andalucia is packed with experiences for every visitor. Spend a slow morning inside the Alhambra in Granada, the only Islamic palatine city in the world to have survived more or less intact, and an afternoon climbing through the whitewashed lanes of the Albaicín opposite. In Córdoba, the Mezquita-Catedral, with its forest of red-and-white striped arches, is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Europe; in Seville, the Real Alcázar remains the oldest royal palace still in use on the continent. Drive up into the Sierra de Grazalema for the pueblos blancos, Ronda, dramatically split by its Tajo gorge and crossed by the eighteenth-century Puente Nuevo above one of the oldest bullrings in Spain; Vejer de la Frontera on its Moorish-walled ridge; Setenil de las Bodegas tucked beneath its overhanging cliffs.
