The Côte d’Azur offers some of the loveliest swimming on the Mediterranean, with a shore that ranges from long sandy crescents to discreet rocky coves. The five-kilometre sweep of Pampelonne, just south of Saint-Tropez, remains the great theatre of the coast, its beach clubs spaced along the dunes for the choreography of a long, slow lunch. On Cap d’Antibes, Plage de la Garoupe is the pine-shaded cove where the Fitzgeralds and Hemingways famously invented the summer season in the 1920s, while Plage de Paloma on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat offers a quieter, more refined version of the same idea. Further west, Plage de l’Escalet near Ramatuelle is the wilder choice, all clear water and low headlands. Closer to Nice, Plage Mala on Cap d’Ail is a hidden cove reached on foot, and Larvotto in Monaco is the principality’s chic urban beach.
The Riviera rewards a traveller who refuses to rush. Mornings might unfold on the old port of Saint-Tropez with a coffee at Sénéquier under its famous red awning, or along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice before wandering the ochre lanes of the old town and the great morning market at the Cours Saleya. Inland, the hilltop villages of Èze, Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Mougins offer half-day pilgrimages into the medieval coast: pale stepped lanes, sudden sea views from 430 metres up, lunch in a courtyard restaurant beneath the bougainvillea.
No coast in Europe has been so completely shaped by twentieth-century art, and the Riviera art trail is one of its great pleasures: the Musée Picasso in the Château Grimaldi at Antibes, the Fondation Maeght above Saint-Paul-de-Vence with its Giacometti, Miró and Calder, and the Musée Matisse in the Cimiez quarter of Nice. From Cannes, small ferries run year-round to the Lérins islands, where the Cistercian monks of Saint-Honorat still tend their vineyard and welcome visitors to lunch.
