Skiathos sits at the western end of the Sporades, off the green coast of mainland Thessaly and a short hop from its larger neighbour Skopelos. It is the smallest of the inhabited Sporades and, by a wide margin, the greenest: dense Aleppo pine forests pour down to a deeply indented coast of pale-sand bays, hidden inland valleys carry olive and fig, and old monastery tracks thread the pine-clad spine of hills between Skiathos Town and the abandoned medieval clifftop of Kastro at the island’s northern tip. The Mamma Mia! films borrowed its harbour and neighbouring Skopelos for the fictional Kalokairi, and the island has carried that lightly held celebrity ever since.
Airport: Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis International Airport (JSI), sitting on a narrow strip of reclaimed land just east of Skiathos Town. Its short, sea-bounded runway has become famous in its own right for the low landing approach over Lagoon Beach, locals gather to watch the wing tips pass almost overhead.
Island Area: Around 50 km², making Skiathos one of the smaller Greek islands, yet within that compass it gathers low pine-clad hills, hidden valleys and somewhere between sixty and seventy distinct beaches.

Skiathos’s reputation rests, more than anything, on its beaches. Koukounaries, at the south-western end of the island, is the famous one: a long, gently curving stretch of very fine pale sand backed by a rare umbrella-pine forest, with shallow, sheltered swimming that ranks among the best in the Aegean. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Lalaria on the wild north coast is reachable only by boat from the old port, a narrow cove of dazzling white pebbles framed by sheer cliffs and a natural rock arch. Banana (really three beaches in a row) is the young, lively pine-framed choice; Vromolimnos is the more sociable bay, with watersports and a relaxed beach-bar scene; and Achladies and Megali Ammos sit closer to town with shallow water and a gentle family rhythm, perfect for an easy morning swim from your villa.
Skiathos rewards an unhurried week. Spend a morning wandering Skiathos Town, its flagstoned lanes, the small Papadiamantis House Museum and the wooded peninsula of Bourtzi, a fifteenth-century Venetian fort that now hosts summer concerts under the pines. A half-day walk inland brings you to the Monastery of Evangelistria, founded in 1794 and the place where the modern Greek flag was first raised in 1807. From here, paths continue through pine and oak woods to the abandoned clifftop village of Kastro at the island’s northern tip, Skiathos’s great melancholic set-piece of foundations, restored chapels and views over the open Aegean.
No Skiathos week is complete without a day on the water.
